27th Knox County Bicycle Challenge

Saturday September 22 - 23

Full Service Tour

7:30-9:30 a.m.

Two rides have been combined under the name of Knox County Fall Challenge. The Knox County Bicycle Challenge and the Columbus Fall Challenge were combined into a new, two-day ride that begins and ends in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

There will be two long distance options each day: 100 miles and a metric century. Saturday’s century will have 5000 feet of grade change, and Sunday’s will include over 7500 feet of grade change. Short routes (32 miles) will also be included each day. Saturday will feature the Kokosing Gap Trail, and Sunday will feature the Heart of Ohio Trail, some of the best rail trails in Ohio.

Long time ride leader Gary Schmidt has designed the routes, and it will offer a perfect bookend to the riding season.  Saturday’s route will keep most of the “classic” KCBC, with the famous lunch stop in Nellie as usual.  Sunday’s route will go north towards Mohican, and it will be hilly!

The great thing about this ride is that there will be some opportunities to cut the course. This means you can attempt the double century and have a reasonable distance back to the start if it is not your day.

The ride will go over Baddow Pass in Holmes County, and that was the highest point a railroad train traveled in Ohio. It is amazing to see the rock that was cut to reduce the percent of the grade for a train to climb. Even then, a steam engine was kept fired to assist trains that could not climb the hill out of Glenmont.

Two snack stops and a lunch stop will be provided each day.  Dinner on Saturday will be on your own. There will be entertainment options on Saturday night in Mount Vernon.

The band is Meg Litteral and friends, who will be playing acoustic folk and bluegrass style music. They will play both days at the lunch stops in Nellie and Loudonville.

Tent, cabins, and RV camping are available at Rustic Knolls Campground (8 minute drive from the start).
