Darby Creek Day
Jim Shaffer has volunteered to help represent COP at Battelle-Darby Creek
Metro Parks Darby Creek Day on Sunday, October 8, from noon to 4 p.m. This is an event that draws several thousand
visitors and the park staff felt our volunteers last year were a big hit. Jim needs folks to meet and greet, do a
paddling demo and put a few visitors in boats. Last year 8 or 10 COP folks helped out. He could especially use someone
to trailer or otherwise haul COP kayaks. Metro park staff is handling canoes and the canoe demo. If you can help,
please contact Jim at jshaffer (AT) pjfweb.com
Home Depot Hits Home Run With COP
The Home Depot has donated twenty (!!!) sheets of plywood to COP to help with a Yough Stop work project. Paul
McPherson, Yough Stop Manager, contacted two Home Depot stores and together they came up with enough materials for
reinforcing the second story Yough Stop floor. Look for a scheduled work party in November to install the plywood and
finish up a couple other odd jobs. Thanks Home Depot! Thanks Paul!
Elders Landing
contributions from COP members total $3700. The land survey is nearly complete and then the
HNS will have 30 days to close the deal. A motion was passed at the last COP board meet-ing to donate $20,000 dollars
to the EL project but it was amended in such a fashion that HNS will be unable to accept the donation.
A Big Thank You
goes out to all the volunteers for FWWWE (Family WhiteWater WeekEnd) which was held on the
New River August 18-20th. Everyone was a big help (the participants included) to make this one of the most fun events
I’ve ever helped with. Here are those who helped: Sharon Hsu, John Lane, Norm Montalto, Larry Krall, Bill Minot, Sharon
Love, Jim Fronk, John Blake, Tom Hardin, Dave Seslar, Jennifer Thurmond, Susanna Heideman (official photographer, see
article in newsletter), and of course the idea person, Keith Finn. A special thanks to experienced boaters Richard and
Rodney McKinley who helped many kids (old and young) with guiding their boats downstream. Thanks, Jennifer
Thurmond
