Eddy Lines by John Lane
This months eddy line column will be bits and pieces, like
usual, an eddy hop of ideas and musings and a pretty awful poem at the end. Read on if you dare.
The April COP filmfest saw thirty-something members and novitiates gather for food and fun. Bill Minot and Susanna Heideman did a great job of organizing. Sabo’s donated wonderful equipment for a raffle and Galyan’s generously gave a touring kayak paddle. More on this in another spot in the newsletter.
We spend enough time as it is indoors. The COP monthly activity
meeting for June is devoted to boating. You won’t find us at the Unitarian Universalist Church this month! Instead,
I’ll be at Alum Creek Beach with the COP sea kayaks on Wednesday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. If you’ve ever wanted to try out
a sea kayak, this would be a great time to do it. No reservations needed, just show up. I’d like to see members bring
their own kayaks out as well and make a celebration of one of the longest days of the year in a long boat!
The Alum Creek Boat Events return again in a slightly altered fashion. This summer we’ll hold eight sessions at the Alum Creek beach. For both June and July there will be a session each week that will start at 6:30 p.m. Show up with or without a boat and prepare to have fun and socialize on the water. We will have spare boats at some of the sessions. Leaders for the session haven’t been picked as of press time. Check in the boating activity schedule for dates.
A reminder to be a good neighbor at Tom Pace’s. Tom has very graciously allowed COP to store canoes and rafts at his place. This spring, several stacked canoes blew over and filled with rainwater. I don’t know if any mosquitoes hatched in there but I know it looked bad - and made Tom mad! Please treat his property better than if it were your own or we may be moving that equipment to your house.
Under the continual unsung hero role, Paul and Darcy McPherson made a spring visit to the Yough Stop and put a fresh coat of floor paint on. Thanks, you two. I’m looking for input from members as to whether we should make a family rate for staying at the Yough Stop. Current rates are $2 per person per night. I’ve been told that this pars with state park rates (when camping with a family) in the area that have better services. If we wanted to charge just the adults and let their kids stay free, I wouldn’t oppose.
The sea kayaks have arrived and COP will inaugurate an introductory sea kayak class. Details elsewhere in the newsletter.
Fernando Caro is interested in getting involved with sea kayak racing. If you’re interested, give him a call at 537-3371.
Lastly, I promised a bad poem. To date, only my wife has been subjected to my bad poetry. This little bit has to do with boating and should be sung to the theme from the TV show starring that purple dinosaur.
I help you. You help me. We’re a boating family. With Kevlar, plastic, fiberglass and foam, We all call the water home.
