PACELINES  By Kathy Hoke

The sunburn on my arms stings, the only downside to a great day on the wonderfully scenic and well planned Top of Ohio Hundred tour in Franklin, Union and Madison counties. The day was gorgeous, the first one in four days of spring tours without clouds, rain or high winds. The sunburn will heal, although I reckon I'll struggle again this summer to keep the jersey lines off my arms.

Aside from this little vanity, the sunshine and sunburn reminded me how vulnerable bicyclists are to the awesome power of nature. Remember the strong winds April 28, the day of the Mid-Ohio Century? The 60-some people brave enough to try to hold on to their handlebars that day either battled the tough headwinds and crosswinds or got gloriously lucky in tailwinds that allowed them to cruise at 35 miles per hour. Despite the sunshine that came out by mid-day, we cancelled a long-planned ride for new riders that was to be led by Susan Parker, a new member and leader who hails from Connecticut. Too windy, too dangerous, and too daunting. We want new folks to come back!

On the other hand, many of COP's bicyclists have learned how to deal with whatever weather nature sends. We have layers of wicking clothes for winter, rain gear to keep us from suffering hypothermia and hydration systems on our backs. The more we're out riding in the spring sunshine, the more we want to be riding in all seasons. We learn that it is possible to ride in the rain, in winter and in the hottest summer heat, if we are prepared.

Are you prepared? Don't forget water, food, tools, spare tubes and a map. Oh yes, and suntan lotion.
