Eddy Lines  by John Lane   0211

I had thought that fall would ease up on the work involved with the boating program.  Maybe I try to delude myself with that every year.  Perhaps it's the gardener in me who really wants to rake the leaves and do the final trimming and enjoy putting the garden to bed for the winter and wishes for the free time to do it in.

Whatever the case, it's time to get on with the planning of next year's season.  We've had a pretty good year with only a few cancellations of water releases and trips.  FWWWE was jinxed again but we had full classes, appreciative students and fun, interesting trips.  Sounds like a good thing to have next year as well.

It does take a lot of talented volunteers who are generous with their time and abilities to make the boating program run.  I hope to feature some of them in upcoming winter issues.  Many thanks to Curt Goetz and Eric Gehres who have agreed to take on some responsibilities I needed to let go.  I have a couple other requests that, if granted, will help me get the leaves raked!  I'd like to get someone to mail out boating leader packets - I haven't been as good on this monthly task as I'd like.  We also have a job - for an organized computing person - to redo the boater list.  It's now 2 1/2 years old and most hard copies are in shreds now.  Lastly, a cattle prod sort of person who can coax the fabulous stories our members have to share about places they've boated from their memories to their keyboards and then on to our newsletter.  If you can help with any of these projects, please contact me at lane.30 (AT) osu.edu.

For the rest of the year, we have one trip, the Flocking to the Hocking, led by the Wadkowski's.  You should go - it's Sunday, December 14.  We also have a scheduling meeting on Thursday, November 14 at the Grandview Heights Public Library at 6:30.  This is where we try to schedule the majority of our trips and schools and events for the coming season.  If you have a favorite place to paddle, why not lead a trip there?  We will also have another evening in November when boating leaders can convene and place an order for good deals on boating gear through NRS.

That's it until our pool sessions start - Sundays in January.

See you on the water.
