I HAVE BIG SHOES TO FILL . . .

Let me first introduce myself. I'm Sharon Seslar and the new Editor of Columbus Outdoors. I've been a member of Columbus Outdoor Pursuits for the last 8 years and have enjoyed every activity-filled year! I started cycling with the organization back in '95. I loved my bike and the feeling of exhilaration and freedom that riding gave me. But I grew tired of the same `ol bike trails and didn't feel comfortable riding on the roads alone, especially given my limited experience and knowledge of sharing the road with others. I joined COP with the hopes of learning a few rules of the road but ended up gaining so much more.

When I arrived at my first COP -- then AYH -- ride, I was a bit late and missed the main group heading out to the Dutch Kitchen. Another late rider recognized my confusion, and offered to take me out to the restaurant. This complete stranger, who was an obviously faster rider than me, patiently rode and conversed with me all the way to the restaurant. Even though we caught up with the group at the Dutch Kitchen, he offered to ride back to the parking lot with me, forgoing the opportunity to pedal more miles with the other COP riders.

I left the parking lot that day feeling welcomed and encouraged to join more rides. I did. And I joined other activities as well. In each, I did learn more technical aspects of the sport, whether it was biking, hiking, or boating. But more important than these practical details, I felt a part of a community. Sure, I had biked and hiked alone before. But doing these activities with others, who enjoyed them just as much as I, made the experience more rewarding.

Few organizations exist that provide the wide breadth of outdoor activities and educational opportunities as COP. Backpacking, bicycle touring, flat and whitewater boating, and leadership training are just a small sampling of activities that this organization provides its members and the community. But more than just a "sports club", COP is a volunteer-based community of friends and neighbors who share a common love of outdoor activities and a camaraderie with each other.

I've always been proud to be a part of this organization and hope that I can continue to positively contribute by accepting the position of Editor for Columbus Outdoors. I have big shoes to fill. My long line of predecessors -- The Thetfords, The Dutros, Julie Schmitt and more too numerous to mention -- have all set a very high bar. They've all done a great job, and I only hope that I can do the same.

If you've enjoyed reading about my experiences with the organization, I encourage you to share yours, as well. General articles are always welcome. Or send in a photo of yourself or your friends doing something you love. This newsletter exists as a benefit to you, our members, and should reflect its readership. The only way this happens is if you contribute -- by sending in an article, a photo, or by continuing to lead and participate in the activities that have made this organization great.

Please note and follow the submission guidelines just right of this article. Questions, suggestions, and comments can be forwarded to me or others on our newly established Media Committee (please contact the COP office for a listing of Media Committee members).

I hope you enjoy reading this and all future issues of Columbus Outdoors.
