Ride to Meet the Mayor
On Friday afternoon May 16th, COP member Jeff Stephens will cycle to City Hall to receive a Proclamation from Mayor Coleman to carry forward with other Mayors' proclamations, in a cross-country relay to promote the National Bicycle Greenways Project.
Jeff will ride to Pittsburgh, pick up the Proclamations gathered so far, then ride them here to Columbus, and meet with Mayor Coleman to receive the Columbus document. He'll then ride these documents to the Indiana state line and hand them off to a representative from Indianapolis.
We'd like to gather as many cyclists at the eastern city limits, on Route 40, to ride en-mass with a police escort, into downtown. This gathering of local cyclists...and the recognition from the Mayor's office...is intended to rally our community to respect bicycling as a viable form of transportation, applaud the City Administration for it's movement to appoint a cyclist to the new Transportation & Pedestrian Commission, to applaud Columbus' long history as a nationally recognized cycling-friendly community, but to encourage our cycling community to get active in advocating for a better cycling environment in our fast-growing city.
Last year's ceremony received some media exposure (Columbus Dispatch)...but with the early support of a large group of local cyclists and other influentials... we expect to receive much more attention this year! Meet at Main St./I-270 Shopping Center (corner of Main St. & McNaughten)

We'll meet just east of that intersection in the parking lot of the closed BJs Superstore. Time - We'll meet at 1:00 pm...and ride as a group with some form of police escort to City Hall. The ceremony with the Mayor & Representatives of City Council starts at 2:30.
