Member Spotlight:
"Bubba" Jeff Stephens
Jeff Stephens, COP member and activist in the Central Ohio Bicycle Advocacy Coalition, was recently appointed to the newly-created Transportation and Pedestrian Commission, organized by Columbus Mayor, Michael B. Coleman. This Commission, created this past July, replaces the former Traffic and Transportation Commission and will play a vital role in the planning and development of the policies and programs that address pedestrian and cycling safety issues in Columbus neighborhoods.
Jeff has been an active member and trip leader with COP. "Columbus Outdoor Pursuits has a rich history of advocacy for cyclists. COP's elders were ahead of their time in these activities," states Jeff. "We need to ensure the foundation they laid...is not eroded. We need COP volunteers to build a grassroots network again."
Of the new commission, Jeff says that "[It's] charge is truly visionary. Instead of concentration on movement of automobiles, we'll be placing a priority on traffic calming. I think it's so important to prioritize traffic calming. For example, our children should be able to walk or ride their bikes to school (and other activities) in safety. The culture of moving our children around in cars...is sad."
This issue of kids and cars safely co-existing is close to Jeff since he was enlightened to cycling as a means of transportation as a 10-year old paperboy. In the years since, he has ridden as a recreational tourist, a racer wannabe, and as a national level ultra marathon racer, culminating in an 11th place finish in the 2001 Race Across America (RAAM). He is taking a sabbatical from competition to raise his first child and has consciously embraced the enjoyment of cycling at a more relaxed pace this year. He has returned to his roots, and enjoys commuting to work by bike several times a week.
Jeff is approachable and enjoys discussing ways to improve the cycling climate in Central Ohio. Because his background spans all niches of cycling, he represents cyclists of all types. Jeff welcomes your questions and concerns; they can be sent to him at 614/781-8245 or raamjeff (AT) wideopenwest.com.
