Gone Caving? By Shelia Sands |
|
| Our COP caving program offers a number of opportunities for
those who have never been in a cave and those wanting to go again. We offer a Beginning Cave
Class that covers what to expect in a cave, clothing, gear, as well as cave conservation. The
class includes a trip suited for the first time caver. We'll even supply the gear you will need.
Thanks to our volunteer leaders, we had quite a few trips on our 2003 schedule. Sheila Sands secured permission from the Southeastern Cave Conservancy for a trip into the protected Wolf River Cave in Tennessee. This was a rather extensive trip and included members who had taken a class several months earlier. We had a number of trips to Kentucky that were geared for beginners. Our trips included a wide age range, from teen-agers, college students, middle-aged, and older. Almost every trip had a mixture of age groups. We replaced most of our gear in the last couple of years, with reliability and safety in mind. This equipment is available to rent at very reasonable rates. We have helmets, lights, knee pads, and cave packs. We welcome you to join us on a trip into one of the last remaining sanctuaries where peace and quiet reign and commercialization ends at the entrance. Our trips are fun, and the comrade that is felt by those of us sharing in this exciting activity makes me eager to go caving soon. Sheila Sands is the Caving Activity Chair. Please contact her at caving (AT) outdoor-pursuits.org or at 937/644-9152 for any questions, or to rent caving equipment. If you are interested in participating in COP's Caving Program, there will be a get-together (above ground, thank you) Tuesday, December 16. See the Activity Schedule for details. |
