I am pleased to report that the COTA Bike `n Bus program for the summer was very much a success.
The Columbus Outdoor Pursuits grant along with the federal air quality grant generated over 30,000
free rides for Columbus bike riders using the bus bike racks from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
On a recent trip to the downtown area I observed many bikes parked outside work sites. Not only
was the program used by commuters to work, I am also aware of recreational riders using the program
to get to trails and suburbs for fun tours. As Columbus Parks and Recreation continues to expand
the Greenway trails in and around Columbus more and more routes should open up for bicycle commuting
and recreation.
In August I attended a press conference in Madison County where Governor Bob Taft announced grants of $13 million in federal transportation enhancement funds from the Ohio Department of Transportation. Among projects throughout the state Governor Taft announced a $436,566 grant to pave the new 6.5-mile section of the Ohio to Erie trail from London to the Franklin County line. "The Ohio to Erie Trail is a wonderful opportunity for bicyclists and pedestrians to travel on a safe serene trail through Ohio's countryside and experience the history that shaped our state along the way," Taft said. Efforts are well under way to secure the right of way to extend the Ohio to Erie trail from the Franklin County line to downtown Columbus. Bob Waddell is again scheduling some Winter Century Series rides on the Ohio to Erie system.
Speaking of scheduling, Roy Burnham would like to set up a series of Mountain Bike rides this fall. Contact Roy, Roy.Burnham (AT) sogeti.com, if you have interest in supporting him in this project or wish to ride with the group.
What a difference a year makes. Last year I was determined to ride the long routes on the Darby and Ridge Runner rides. This year, armed with my camera, I did routes from 40 to 60 miles on those tours and enjoyed the scenery and observed the other riders and their experiences. Many thanks to the Darby ride leaders, Bob Waddell, Randy Brownfield, and Dave Brokaw and to Tim Faigley of the Ridge Runner for another super experience. I only wish my schedule allowed me to attend all COP rides and tours. But, to date, there are still a few I have not been able to ride.
