Pacelines
By Jack Hornsby, Bicycling Activity Leader
December 2005
Like other bicyclists, I was greatly saddened by the death of Ed Honton. He leaves a legacy of accomplishments
for which I am very appreciative. I use maps developed by Ed on many of my solo rides and am a devoted
fan of the Ohio to Erie trail created by Him. I look forward to each summer and the Great Ohio Bicycle
Adventure, originated in 1988 by ED. And, these are only a few of his many contributions to Ohio
cycling.
Mid November was the date of our annual Ride Leader's get together. It was our time to see fellow leaders and swap stories. Annually we try to recognize outstanding efforts by those responsible for COP rides and tours.
Special thanks go to those who stepped up to assume leadership of several rides. Bobbi Bedinghaus put together a super WOODSTOCK. Bobbi had almost 400 riders, including an entire High School swimming team on a cross-training outing. Thanks to Woody Barry and Andys Burns, the Mid Ohio Century was moved back to the Delaware area this year. Much effort went into planning the routes and stops on MOC. If only the weather had cooperated this would have been one of our highlights. Veteran SPOT leaders Bruce and Barb Meyers assumed leadership of the Columbus Fall Challenge this year. New start and end points were planned for CFC. Thanks also to David Hoodin for acting as Assistant leader this year on the Covered Bridge Century in preparation of giving Gordon Renkes a vacation next year.
The Saturday Roving Ride Series put together by Donna Bush and others proved to be very successful for the second year. The Winter Century Series led by Bob Waddell was again available to those hardy cold weather riders. Thanks also to Roy Burnham for leading Mountain Bike outings for the members.
And, certainly thanks go to Ron Doran and Catherine for a wonderful Top of Ohio. Ron postponed heart surgery until after TOP in order to provide us with a super ride with awesome maps and road markings.
Bike Midwest magazine has added an online resource. Check out their new site, www.MidwestBikeRides.com for nearby multi-state ride listings. Ride leaders can list events on this site for free.
