Pacelines
By Jack Hornsby, Bicycling Activity Leader
March 2006
How about the weather so far? Bob Waddell’s Winter Series has been very popular this year. My hope
is that this mild weather will continue into the spring rides. March is my month to get the bike
down and start the gradual process of getting ready for TOSRV. I certainly am excited about the
upcoming season. Be sure to join me for our excellent spring schedule leading up to TOSRV. I have
already registered for TOSRV, GOBA, and XOBA. My plans are to ride and photograph as many COP rides
as I can fit in my schedule. Walt Williams has asked me to act as an official photographer on XOBA
this year. I am pleased to do so since I feel I am contributing in a small way to the major efforts
put out by Walt and our other ride organizers. COP volunteers keep our programs the most recognized
tours in the Midwest. Check the XOBA website for Photos of last year’s ride.
In addition to our annual schedule many specialty COP rides of 2 and 3 days are in the works. Keep an eye on the newsletter and website. Bicycle touring continues to become more popular. I have had calls from at least 5 groups in Ohio starting new tours this year.
I have received a number of calls this winter from a variety of groups or individuals asking about the availability of used and donated bikes. Some calls have been from churches and parents and I have also talked to one group about helping with bikes for International Exchange Students. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to help those callers to this point. However I am exploring possible solutions and have some leads. I would like to ask for your help if you have, or know of bikes, that could be passed on to those who could use them. While this type of activity is not within the charter of COP I do have Bicycle Advocacy contacts that could provide this service to those needing it.
New riders and current riders, why not plan to join us for our annual membership meeting for bike activities. The meeting is at 7pm on Tuesday, March 21 at the COP offices. Join us for socializing followed by a short meeting and a presentation by Rick Miller of the bike shop “A Gear Higher”. Rick will give us important information on getting the bike ready for summer and answer our general questions.
Saturday, March 4 has been scheduled as the primary date for Ride Leader training. See the meeting section for details. Please contact me if you have an interest.
