A Bicycle Wedding
By Tom and Debbie Davis
You're going to get married with your bicycles??? You're going to wear wedding cycling gear??? You're going to attach a veil to Debbie's helmet??? You're actually going to ride your bicycles right after you get married??? Being avid and somewhat crazy cyclists, we thought these were all great ideas! Our families, co-workers, and non-cycling friends were not so sure, but that did not stop us from having our bicycle wedding. So, on October 10, 2006, we got married with our bicycles on Turtle Beach in Sarasota, Florida. Tom wore a tuxedo jersey with black shorts and Debbie wore a white jersey with white shorts. Our wedding vows were kept in our jersey pockets in case we were distracted during the ceremony because we were thinking more about our post-wedding ride route than getting married. Tom's Look was best man and ring bearer and Debbie's Bianchi was maid of honor. Debbie's flowers were red for her Bianchi and yellow for Tom's Look. Our guests were vacationers, boaters, pelicans, sea gulls, fish, and, oh yes, Debbie's parents and a few friends. After the ceremony, we carb-loaded with wedding cake, filled our water bottles with champagne, took the obligatory wedding photographs, and said a quick goodbye to our guests. After all, we were anxious to ride! Who wants to stick around a wedding party when you can ride, even if it's your own wedding party! We got on our bicycles, and once Debbie managed to get the veil out of her face, we had our first ride together as a married couple and, more importantly, we added to our yearly mileage totals!
