Welcome to the COP Boating Calendar

Located below are two calendars. The first one you see are trips proposed by COP members. These trips may need leaders and details finalized. The second calendar you see is the official registration calendar. The events on the second calendar are taking registrations - so if you see a trip you want to join, click on it and sign up! Many of our trips sell out, so don't delay.

How do I add a trip or event to this calendar?

If you would like to add a trip to the first calendar, you can access it through Google (you need to be logged into to a google account). Click on the Google Calendar icon near the bottom of the calendar below. Once you add it, this calendar below will automatically update.

If you want to set up a trip registration and don't have access, please let us know. All leaders should have access to set up trips.

Some more Southern Paddling!  We will leaving March 24th for a week of paddling in Southern Georgia.   This year, I am hoping the we can do a few days on the Satilla River, and finish the week with some paddling in the Okefenokee Swamp.  As always, our plans can be upset with sudden rise in rivers, so I will have a backup plan in my pocket.

We will leave Columbus on March 24th, and return by April 2nd.

Little Beaver Creek Pagan Paddle, Class I Trip

     April 22 – 23,  2017

Well, the annual Pagan paddle has is coming up soon. We're postponing it until the weekend after Easter.

Flowing through some of Ohio’s wildest and most scenic areas, Little Beaver Creek in Columbiana County was the first in Ohio to be designated a Wild River.  This is a great springtime paddle!

We’ll do our leisurely Saturday morning breakfast, then make our way to the put-in, shuttle the vehicles and be on the water around 11:30 am.  We might paddle from the park to the Ohio River . . . or start upstream of the park and paddle the 10 or so miles back.  It all depends on the water level . . . and our collective mood.  Sunday morning, the pace is even more leisurely.  Be prepared to be flexible.

The paddling is mostly flat water with the occasional riffle and perhaps a Class II if the water level is right (nothing really challenging).  The scenery is unbelievable, the camping fun, the camaraderie abundant and the there will be plenty of stories around the campfire!

Get over there early (Friday) and take a hike – there are some nice trails along the river and through the park.  Check out the restored lock from the Sandy and Beaver Canal, the park's nature center, the pioneer village and Gaston's Mill.

We’ll be camping at the state park Friday and Saturday nights, so we won’t be carrying any camping gear on board (just dry clothes and lunch!).  Little Beaver Creek State Park is a 3.5 hour drive from Columbus.  The weather is expected to be perfect, so plan on going!

What better way to celebrate Earth Day but on a beautiful river in the mountains. Possible options are Dry Fork, Cheat Narrows, or Casselman depending on water levels.  If you are interested, please contact Bill Ward 419-674-8210 botnbill@gmail.com or Brent Lehman oc1wrat@gmail.com

    Introduction to Whitewater

    Saturday, April 22, 2017

Learn to paddle whitewater with Columbus Outdoor Pursuits!

The 2017 Intro to Whitewater Clinic is designed for those students interested in learning to paddle in swift(er) moving water or whitewaterWe will spend the day on the Rocky Fork & Paint Creek in southern Ohio

You will learn a progression of whitewater paddling skills on the water during this one-day clinic. Starting Saturday morning at Rocky Fork Lake State Park this clinic teaches the necessary skills for paddling most of Ohio's fast moving rivers and is the first step toward Class III and greater whitewater kayaking.

Students are required to have previous experience in a kayak and knowledge of and comfort executing the basic paddle strokes (i.e., Beginner Kayak/IRK school, pool session practice, previous river kayaking, or similar paddling experience).  The student must be able to demonstrate proper balance and boat control on flatwater in order to get the most out of this class.  Contact us if you have questions about your experience and skills needed for this class.

Please arrive by 8:30 am and expect a full day of instruction.  Camping is available at several state parks in the area if you are traveling from afar and want to arrive the night before or stay the next day.  Plenty to see and do in the area...

    Rocky Fork State Park

    9800 N. Shore Dr.

    Hillsboro, Oh 45133

We will begin with a brief overview of whitewater specific strokes and maneuverability on the lake before moving downstream to the put-in for the remainder of the on-water clinic.

The ability to Eskimo roll a kayak is not required for this class but students must have experience performing wet exits. See our remaining pool sessions if you need practice.

All gear can be rented from COP for $20 and can be selected during your registration.

Your fees cover instruction, a snack, a hot meal for lunch, shuttle and coordination, dam release, and plenty of corny jokes...not to mention a lovely guided tour through the amazing Highlands Nature Sanctuary and old 7 Caves area.

You may register early but all payments must be made by April 3rd, 2016.
If you are unable to pay online a paper application can be filled out and mailed along with a check and may be requested by contacting boating@outdoor-pursuits.org.

Additional info and itinerary will be sent following your paid registration.

    What you need...

    Positive mental attitude

The desire to push your paddling skills and to listen and learn from the instructors

    Gear-
Students are encouraged to supply their own whitewater kayaks and gear, if practical.  Boats 10ft. or less are preferred for this Intro level clinic.  Please note that sea kayaks, fishing, and long, less maneuverable kayaks are not appropriate for this school.  Crossover kayaks may be used and should have flotation bags in the storage area with a working hatch.
All kayaks must be in good condition and have appropriate flotation with a fitted cockpit skirt. Students must also have type III/V life jacket, paddle, and a whitewater helmet.
All equipment can be rented from Columbus Outdoor Pursuits in whole or part, contact us to discuss your needs.
The school has a limited number of kayaks available on a first-come basis, determined by acceptance of paid and accepted application.

    Clothing-

Just like any time of year the weather is unpredictable but water and air temps are generally at a cool Spring level.  Appropriate attire is of utmost importance, we just can’t stress this enough.  Be prepared to get wet and avoid wearing cotton clothing.  You can paddle comfortably for this clinic and most of the year without purchasing high dollar drysuits and dry gear.  Wetsuits (full or farmer-john), semi-dry and splash tops, poly-pro, wool underlayers and socks, neoprene booties are all great items to have in the closet for any type of cool and cold weather paddling.  A few links to help get an understanding of proper cold weather gear available.

Footwear shall be snug fitting. Flip flops, Crocs, or other loose type of beach or water shoe may fall off and float downstream at the most in-opportune time.  Tennis shoes tend to be to big to fit in the footwell of a whitewater boat.

Check with local SCUBA and dive shops as they will often rent out wetsuits and other neoprene and cold water immersion gear.

If you do not have any of this outerwear and will not be able to purchase or rent by time of the class please contact us and we will do our best to locate loaner gear for your use.
