    Introduction to Moving Water

    Saturday, May 12, 2018 – 8:00 AM

Have you seen kayakers on whitewater and wanted to give that a try? Not sure you are ready for challenging, fast moving whitewater? The Introduction to Moving Water teaches the same skills used by whitewater kayakers, but on a less challenging, but still moving river in Ohio.

This class teaches the skills you need to paddle comfortably on Class I and II rivers. After getting comfortable, you might decide to some day move up to more challenging Class III or IV whitewater, or you might be content to continue paddling Class I/II rivers.

In this class, you will learn how to take advantage of the moving current to go where you want to go and to recognize and avoid river hazards. You will learn forward ferries, eddy turns, peel outs, and back ferries. We will not teach basic kayaking in this course. Before taking this class you should be comfortable performing a wet exit and have enough kayaking experience to make your kayak go where you want it to go.

This is a full day course, starting at 8:00 AM and lasting for about 8 hours, including driving to a local river in Central Ohio.

Cost: $65 for COP members, $75 for Non-Members

Kayaks, along with other essential equipment, are provided as part of the course, or you can use your own kayak if it is appropriate for moving water.

This course is part of a series of kayaking courses from COP.

    The series includes:

Introduction to Kayaking (Indoor Session) – in March

Introduction to Whitewater – in April

Introduction to Moving Water – in May and June

Introduction to Kayaking (Outdoor Session) – in June, July, and August

Take this course (Introduction to Moving Water) if you have already taken Introduction to Kayaking, either the indoor session (in a pool) or outdoor session (on a lake) or already have enough kayaking experience to be comfortably in control of a kayak. Take this class if you are interested in taking the Introduction to Whitewater class, but are not sure you are ready for whitewater yet.
