On this morning, some mighty ambitious former GOBA riders, the Abers offered breakfast to the entire XOBA population! They prepared a breakfast of pancakes, waffles, ham, juice, and home brew maple syrup and served it at their 1879 Italianate Victorian farm house. It was fantastic! A few miles down the road in Jeromesville I talked to Gwendolyn, a grandmother to all the children around her, and four elderly gentlemen in a diner who let me take their picture as they put their arms around each other - way cool. Later I stopped at an orchard for some juicy peaches. Meanwhile, elementary school age workers came in from the fields to eat lunch. It was humorously obvious that they hadn’t seen many females in lycra-like fabric. One way or another, the ride through Berlin will remain emblazoned on many people’s minds. First there was the steep uphill into town, impossible traffic, shoppers’ feet shuffling from one shop to another, and the buggy-rutted road with passing semis on St. Rt. 39. Luckily, Rick from Dayton and I stopped at a roadside rest, checked the map and took county roads into Sugar Creek, pausing once at an overlook where we met Ann who was reveling in the view. The women’s shower at the Sugar Creek High School was set in a dungeon and only cold water dribbled from the shower heads even though Patty had tried her best to decipher the plumbing. Oh well, a thousand calories later at the Amish restaurant and I emerged in a much better mood. There, Ann and I met Tom’s brother, Dan, who plays straight man to Tom’s humor.
